Contract Technical Writer

Job Responsibilities:

The Technical Writer will provide support as a resource specialist in writing, cataloging and maintaining technical publications. This project will require the Technical Writer to create, write, and edit publications including, manuals, briefs, proposals, procedures, software documentation, articles, brochures and related materials. This activity will require the Technical Writer to conduct research and interview subject experts to understand and present technical materials; and performs inspections and tests to ensure the documentation is correct. Each project will have a specific set of deliverables that falls in line with the general summary. Each project will require the Technical Writer to organize and write technical materials using word processing software per defined corporate standards with respect to layout, order, style and terminology.

Ideal background and skills

  • Experience creating user manuals and technical manuals
  • Experience in clearly communicating technical information to end users with various skill sets
  • Experience organizing and maintaining an inventory of various documents
  • Experience maintaining a technical knowledgebase
  • Experience in creating/editing screen captures for documentation
  • Experience in editing and proofreading documents written by others
  • Experience in maintaining a corporate style guide
  • Experience in creating end-user help files
  • Outstanding written communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in multi-tasking
  • Fluent in Microsoft Word (including creating indexes, TOCs, formatting tables, the use of styles), Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Internet browsers
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision but to also function as team member

Language Skills:

  • Must have excellent grammar and spelling skills
  • Ability to organize and present ideas and procedures in a logical manner
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from a variety of people including but not limited to top management, clients, technicians, and the public

Preferred Job Skills/Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years writing/editing experience in a professional writing position
  • Competency in Windows applications including word processing, spreadsheet, publication and graphics production software
  • Domain knowledge of telecommunication concepts
  • Subject matter expert in call recording preferred, but will consider a candidate who understands the subject area and terminology that can hit the ground running.
  • Experience with Project management, translation, Information Mapping, Instructional Design, HTML, online help, among others.
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Professional writing samples and/or prepared one- or two-page writing assignment.
  • Some data base experience
  • Knowledge of corporate training procedures

Education/Degree Required:

Bachelors degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Publications, or a related technical field.
