T-1
A digital phone connection that operates on a standard twisted pair of wires but carries 24 voice channels on that one wire pair by TIME-DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (see also). The multiplexing circuitry divides a unit of time into 24 segments and sends data from each digitized voice channel in its corresponding segment, so each channel transmits one packet of information for each unit of time. At the other end of the line, the packets for each channel are broken out, reassembled and converted back to an analog voice signal

The equivalent of 28 T-1 (see also) lines that runs on a fiber optic circuit

TANDEM CALL
A call in which two trunks are connected together in the PBX, as opposed to connecting a trunk to a station. For example, if a user calls into a PBX and is able to obtain a line to dial out to another location, that would be a tandem call

TAPI (TELEPHONE APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE)
The set of Windows functions that allow software to talk to telephony devices, such as telephones, modems and fax machines.

TARIFF
A public statement filed by a telephone company with a state Public Utilities Commission (see also) or the FCC (see also) that details the services and equipment the company will offer its customers and the rates for those items. Referring to "the tariffs" usually means phone usage rates

TCP/IP (TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL/INTERNET PROTOCOL)
A standard that defines the exchange of information over interconnected computer networks between a diverse range of hardware platforms and operating systems

TELECONNECT
Usually refers to a company that sells, installs and services phone system equipment for businesses.

TELEMANAGEMENT
Managing one's telecommunications resources, including planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of phone systems and voice and data networks.

TELESTATISTICS
Data pertaining to the usage of various aspects of a telecommunications system, including trunk usage, call costs, calling patterns, numbers dialed, etc

TIE LINE
Any circuit that connects one PBX to another

TIME-DIVISION MULTIPLEXING
Sending more than one data stream over a single communications path by dividing time into slices and portioning the multiple data streams among the time slices. See also T-1.

TRAFFIC
Any voice or data transmissions

TRUNK
Any circuit that connects a PBX to a central office exchange for the purpose of making and receiving calls.

TRUNK GROUP
A trunk or any number of trunks that have the same PBX group number within the switch and/or are accessed in the same manner or send their traffic out over the same carrier. Also known as ROUTE.

TSAPI
A software interface developed by AT&T for performing PBX functions, including call routing, directory services, and maintenance, on computer-based telephony platforms

TWX (TELETYPEWRITER EXCHANGE)
(pronounced "TWIX") A switched communications service utilizing typewriter-like terminals to send text messages.
