SECONDARY STORAGE
Data storage available to the computer that is significantly slower than its main memory, such as disk drive or magnetic tape storage.

SERIAL TRANSMISSION
Transmission where the data is transmitted one bit at a time over one line. See also PARALLEL TRANSMISSION. SERVICE TYPE : (HG) A trunk or any number of trunks, usually with the same PBX group number within the switch, that are all accessed in the same manner, utilize the same carrier, and have the same usage pricing structure.

SHARE
The name given to a virtual volume or folder that is a shared resource on a network. See also UNC. The share name can be used to avoid having to remember a drive letter or other details of the exact path of the folder

SMDR (STATION MESSAGE DETAIL RECORDING)
The raw data that the PBX outputs, normally in an ASCII format, giving the one or more records of information regarding a call. The records are in sequential order as they are made. The format and number of records per call depend on the manufacturer of the system. Also known as CDR (CALL DETAIL RECORDING).

SMTP (SIMPLE MAIL TRANSFER PROTOCOL)
The TCP/IP protocol for transmitting text email messages over a network, including compound messages that might have image, voice or other file attachments

SPEECH RECOGNITION
A computer process of identifying spoken words input through a microphone or telephone and transcribing those words into text data within the computer. Those words can then be processed as input commands or turned into documents for editing or output.

STATION BUSY INDICATION
A light that is normally associated with a line. When it is illuminated, it tells the observer that line is in use.

STATION EQUIPMENT
The equipment that is attached to a line, usually a telephone set.

STATION NUMBER
The number to which a line is assigned. Also known as an EXTENSION

SUFFIX
The last four digits of a telephone number, according to the NANP (see also).

SYSTEM MEMORY
The main memory (RAM, see also) of the computer, as contrasted with secondary storage. The system memory is where the computer stores programs while it is executing them, and it is used by programs to store information while they are running
