D-CHANNEL
A communications line that carries signaling information separate from the lines carrying data. See also ISDN. (HG) D-Channels, from PRI (see also) lines or station-side digital taps, can be used to trigger starting or stopping recordings, and capturing other data from the phone system related to DNIS, dialed digits, ANI, or even whatever appears on individual phone set displays.

DAUGHTERBOARD
An integrated circuit board that attaches to another circuit board and provides additional circuitry to expand the functions of the host, which can be a MOTHERBOARD (see also) or another board, such as a video card.

DDD (DIRECT DISTANCE DIALING)
The ability of a caller to place a call without the assistance of the operator.

DHCP (DYNAMIC HOST CONFIGURATION PROTOCOL)
A protocol for managing computer networks that allows for automatic assignment of IP (see also) addresses on the LAN or WAN, freeing network administrators from having to assign and manage IP addresses manually.

DID (DIRECT INWARD DIALING)
A combination of features between the central office of the telephone company and the PBX. It allows a party calling into a PBX to be directly connected to a station associated to the number dialed, without the assistance of the operator.

DIL (DIRECT INWARD LINE)
A line or trunk on a telephone system that, when dialed, connects directly to a specific station without assistance of the operator.

DISA (DIRECT INWARD SYSTEM ACCESS)
Also called DIRECT INWARD SERVICE ACCESS. Allows the party calling in to have the same use of the system as an on premises station, including intercom calling and outside calling. There is normally a code to enter before access is granted. The trunk can have any class of service that the system offers.

DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING
An operation that processes information in a number of locations instead of just one. (HG) In a system with SMDR data collection at multiple locations or switches, each location processes its own data and stores it locally. The individual units can still be accessed via the WAN from a central location and reported on separately or collectively as if the data resided in a central location. See also CENTRALIZED PROCESSING

DISTRIBUTED RECORDING
(HG) A voice recording system in which calls or radio transmissions are recorded at individual workstations located at each phone or radio set. This is an alternative to having central voice recorders doing all the recording (CENTRALIZED RECORDING) (see also).

DIU (DATA INTERFACE UNIT)
Equipment that provides a modem-like application on the PBX on a station line of the system

DNIS (DIALED NUMBER IDENTIFICATION SERVICE)
A telephone service that provides the called party with the number that was dialed in placing the call. Useful when multiple numbers terminate at the same destination, the DNIS number identifies which number was actually dialed.

DOD (DIRECT OUTWARD DIALING)
A feature of a PBX that allows outgoing calls to be dialed directly, without the need of an operator. DSL (DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE) : A service over conventional phone lines that provides simultaneous transmission of voice and data over one twisted pair of wires. Most commonly used today for sharing Internet connections and phone lines.

DSN (DEFENSE SWITCHED NETWORK)
The network that handles voice and data communications for the Department of Defense

DSP (DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSOR)
A special computer chip designed for high-speed processing of large quantities of data. DSPs are used in voice recording interface cards to compress recorded data at a high rate of speed.

DSS (DIRECT STATION SELECTION)
A feature of the system that allows connection of an outside call to a station by using one button on the console.

DTMF (DUAL-TONE MULTIFREQUENCY)
Also known as TOUCH-TONE or TOUCH CALLING. A method of signaling in which two tones are used simultaneously to represent one number.

DTMF DIGITS
The string of digits a telephone caller presses on the telephone keypad, which can be captured and used for input. Usually refers to digits pressed after dialing a phone number and making a connection. See also DTMF.
